The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) launched their 70th Anniversary celebrations under the distinguished patronage of the Chancellor and Asantehene His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II amidst other dignatries to grace the occasion.
The ceremony took place at KNUST Great Hall in Kumasi on 28th October, 2021 to celebrate the University’s 70 years of excellence and producing reputable personnels.
Dr. Adutwum, an alumnus of KNUST expressed his gratitude for being an alumnus and pointed out that KNUST has already made massive impact globally. He mentioned that he spent 26 years in the United States and in almost every community in the Los Angeles, there is a graduate of KNUST living there.
He also mentioned that the government is ready to support the University to attain the highest standards because the University is already even ahead of some Tertiary Institutions in the US and with some aid, can become the best.
“We commend you for the role you have played in absorbing graduates from the Free Senior High School. The Free SHS is a means to an end; it’s not an end in itself… KNUST’s ability to absolve more students is contributing to the growth of our gross Tertiary enrolment ratio.” Dr. Adutwum revealed.
“We do not want students to come to the University for the first time to hear about aviation; Now they should do it in Junior High School and they should do it in High School. That is not going to be possible if we do not change our Junior High School system. It is the weakest link in our education system.” Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum stated during his speech at the event.
He also added that there is the need to transform the Junior High School into a full fledged lower Secondary education regime. According to Dr. Adutwum, this is necessary because it will be difficult for Universities to turn them into the graduates that the want since they won’t be adequately prepared to do the programs offered at the University.
