On October 6, 2023, the 30th anniversary edition of the National Science & Maths Quiz began. The 30th Anniversary celebrations have made this year’s NSMQ a thrilling feature, with two different locations—KNUST in Kumasi and National Theatre in Accra—hosting it.
The Grand Finale of the 2023 National Science and Math’s Quiz (NSMQ) took place the National Theatre, Accra which saw three (3) Senior High Schools battle it out for the trophy.
The Final contest, which took place on 30th October, 2023 was between PRESEC-Legon,Opoku Ware School and Achimota SHS. PRESEC won the contest at the end of the day to set some records in the competition.

PRESEC’s Journey to the 2023 NSMQ Finals
The winner, Presec Legon, had earlier won the Greater Accra Regional Championship by defeating Accra Academy and Tema Methodist SHS.
PRESEC, being one of the seeded schools, went head-to-head against Konongo-Odumasi SHS and Kumasi Wesley Girls’ SHS in a bid to secure a spot in the 2023 NSMQ Quarter-final Stage.
PRESEC met GSTS and their old foe again, Accra Academy, in the Quarter-final stage. At the National Championship, Accra Academy suffered yet another heartbreaking defeat in spite of their will to end PRESEC’s supremacy.
However, at the end of the contest, PRESEC emerged as the winner with an impressive score of 60 points and proceeded to the Semi-finals.
There was a close clash between the seven-time champions of the NSMQ competition, PRESEC, and the two-time victors, Mfantsipim School and KETASCO in the Semi-finals.
In the end, PRESEC secured a spot in the grand Finale with 44 points.
Records set by PRESEC-Legon
In the NSMQ, Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, Legon, has a long history. With unrivalled accomplishments, PRESEC is actually the most successful school in the competition’s history.
Here are the records set;
- PRESEC sets the record of being the only school to achieve Five (5) successive finals.
- Presbyterian Boys’ SHS won the competition for the 8th time and becomes the most successful school in the competition.
- PRESEC set the record of being the only school for winning the competition back-to-back twice! (2008, 2009 and 2022, 2023)
