Ghana Education Service (GES) in a letter signed by the Ag. Director HRMD confirmed Dr. Eric Nkansah as the new Director-General of Ghana Education Service.
His appointed came shortly after Professor Opoku Amankwah was relieved of his secondment as the Director-General of GES on 17th October, 2022.

Opposition from Teacher Unions on Dr. Nkansah’s Appointment
The three teacher unions, Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) were in opposition to the appointment of Dr. Nkansah as Director-General of Ghana Education Service.
Mr. Thomas Musah, the General Sectary of GNAT, explained that Dr. Nkansah’s credentials were more suited for him to be in the financial sector of Ghana and can ultimately aid the government make informed financial decisions.
This led to the teacher unions declaring a strike with the aim of getting for him to be removed and replaced with an educationist.

The strike which was declared on 4th November, 2022 and lasted for a week was called off after government’s interlocutory injunction granted by the High Court.
National Labour Commission however urged the Ministry of Education and the Teacher Unions to solve the matter peacefully without disrupting the academic calendar.
Confirmation of Dr. Nkansah as Director General of GES
GES officially confirmed Dr. Eric Nkansah as the GES Director-General in a letter dated on 4th January, 2023 and mentioned that all correspondents and memoranda should be addressed as such.
Although Dr. Eric Nkansah was appointed as the Director-General on 19th October, 2022, he was in the position as an acting Director-General.
Dr. Eric Nkansah before his appointment held the position of Director of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education. He was also a Senior Lecturer at the Kumasi Technical University.
