The Royal Commonwealth Society is inviting the youth of Commonwealth Member States to participate in the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition (QCEC) 2023.
The Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service is aiding with the dissemination of this great opportunity to various schools and youth who fit within the stipulated age range.
Winners of the competition will win a special award from the royal palace and a week-long educational trip to London.
About the QCEC
The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay competition is the world’s oldest international writing competition.
This year, 2023, will mark one hundred and forty (140) years since it was established in 1883. Thousands of young people participate every year and Ghana is no exception.
It is a vital means of elevating youth, recognising their accomplishments, and developing key abilities through creative writing.
There are currently 54 countries that belong to the Commonwealth including the United Kingdom, which is considered the “mother country” of the Commonwealth.
In 2022, the winners emerged from New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom and India.
How to Participate in the 2023 QCEC
The QCEC 2023 is open for entries between 16th March and 30th June, 2023. The competition is separated into two categories; Senior and Junior Category.
The SENIOR CATEGORY includes people born between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2009, that is 14-18 years of age. The topics this category is allowed to write on includes;
- As Head of the Commonwealth His Majesty The King is opening an international conference on the importance of young people in decision making. Write his speech.
- Does age matter?
- The 2023 Year of Youth was a moment of significant social change – what was its impact on the world?
- Script a dialogue between two people, with contrasting viewpoints, on an issue that divides generations.
The JUNIOR CATEGORY includes children born on or after 1 July 2009, that is, under 14 years of age. The topics this category is allowed to write on includes;
- In fiction and throughout history, young people have performed numerous acts of heroism. Choose your favourite young hero and write to them about why you admire them.
- What is your youthful superpower, and how can it make a positive difference to the world?
- You have been stranded on a planet where everyone is 18 or under. Journal your experience.
- Why does your voice matter?
