The Science, Technology, Mathematics and Innovation Education (STMIE) Camp in Saltpond this year, which culminated at the Mfantsiman Girls SHS in the Central Region on Friday, February 24, 2023, revealed Kpando SHS as the overall best school out of the 245 participating SHS schools.
Throughout the five-day program, students were divided into several classes for project-based learning. The kids were given lessons in physics, agricultural science, chemistry, mathematics, biology, and computing before taking tests to determine their understanding of the material.
Mr. Stephen Kwaku Owusu, the Deputy Director-General of GES in charge of Management Services, commended the teachers and students for the excellent display of STEM/STEAM-related creative works on behalf of the Director-General, Dr. Eric Nkansah, who served as the event’s chairman.
Additionally, he stated that GES is committed to employing STEM/STEAM to improve the nation’s development.
Mrs. Olivia Serwaa Opare, the Director for the Science Education Unit at GES (National STEM Resource Centre), stated that the goal of the Camp was to give students the chance to participate in hands-on STEM/STEAM activities as the surest way to permanently imprint the concepts taught in the classroom on the students.
The need to prioritize STEM education in the nation was stressed by other speakers, including the Special Advisor on STEM Policy to the Honourable Minister for Education, Prof. Adom Asamoah, who spoke on behalf of the Minister, and the event’s guest speaker, Prof. (Mrs.) Mercy Denkyi.
Several awards were given out in the names of the students’ schools to campers who excelled.
The projector was given to Kpando SHS, the overall top school, in order to enhance digital learning there. This honor is referred to as the Special Award of the Honourable Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
The overall winner of the Camp was Stephen Agbofah from the Kpando SHS in the Volta area. The Director-General of GES presented him with a laptop as the top award for taking home the coveted honour.
Oti region’s Worawora SHS won the title of best project school at the Camp.
Stephen Agbofah from the Kpando SHS was the winner, with Sulemana Madihatu and Mawunyega Elikem from Ghana SHS in Tamale and Holly Child School in Cape Coast placing first and second, respectively, in the top three award category.
They each received a medal, trophy, and certificate as part of their awards.
As the finest female student in the Camp, Sulemana Madihatu, once more from the Ghana SHS in Tamale, was awarded a trophy.
