One of the leading technological Institutes in Ghana, Accra Institute of Technology (AIT) has seen one of their students develop a sophisticated AI system to capture motorists who break the rules.
The AI Helmet Detection Technology
Ghana has seen a rise in motor accidents in recent times since the introduction of the “Okada” hailing business by motorist.
This business has seen most youth without licence and proper training jump into the business and it has caused more harm than good.
In an attempt to clamp down on motorists who flout road traffic rules, a student of Accra Institute of Technology (AIT) has developed a system called the ‘AI DETECTION AND LICENSE PLATE RECOGNITION’.
Governor Okorno, the level 400 student who developed the system designed it to ensure the use of helmets by motorists.
The system is designed to receive a video or an image as input. It can be a video from a surveillance camera, a body cam, or any video recording. After it is fed into the system, it analyzes, and detects riders without a helmet and captures their number plate. In cases where a helmet is worn, there’s no capture.
After the license plate is captured, it stores an image of it and matches it to the rider in a database, and displays their information for further use.
This Technology could help capture a lot of defaulters at areas where the police aren’t available since most of these motorists like to operate in police-free zones.
AIT is a technology-driven private university accredited by the National Accreditation Board (NAB) of Ghana. They operate on both campus-based and online (open university) education in Ghana.
AIT is also ranked as one of the top private university in Ghana by the Ghana Tertiary Awards.
